No. 5 Texas dropped another midweek game, losing to Texas State, 5-3, on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. This loss marked Texas’ fourth consecutive defeat at home to the Bobcats, who have won five of the last seven matchups in the series.
“I was proud of the way we battled back,” head coach Jim Schlossnagle said. “(Texas State) just got one more swing in there.”
Texas’ starting pitcher Kade Bing gave a solid performance throwing 6.1 hitless innings. However, the Bobcats managed to score in the third, gaining confidence and momentum against the SEC team.
Texas sophomore center fielder Will Gasparino tied the game after hitting a home run during the bottom of the fourth inning, marking his tenth of the season. The Longhorns took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning after freshman Cole Chamberlain scored on a balk with Tommy Farmer IV advancing to second base.
Entering the eighth inning, Texas made a pitching change as Jason Flores entered the game for Bing. With some errors from the Longhorns’ field coverage, the Bobcats were able to score two points, unearned, due to error, taking a 5-2 lead entering the ninth.
Not giving up, Texas quickly gained momentum from the start of the ninth as Farmer drew a leadoff walk, and junior left fielder Jayden Duplantier doubled to left center allowing Farmer to run it home for the Longhorns. Mendoza struck out on a high fastball, but Flores singled to right field and Galvan loaded the bases with a full-count walk.
The rally fell flat as Gasparino popped out on the first pitch, and Schuessler’s hard-hit line drive was caught to end the game.
“We have a saying to just shower really good and (wash) it off,” Gasparino said. “Wake up the next morning and it’s a new day, tomorrow’s a new day.”
Despite the loss, Texas now looks ahead to hosting No. 3 Georgia this weekend at UFCU Disch-Falk Field for a weekend series.
