Over his badge, a memorial ribbon reads “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit,” which translates to “No One Attacks Me With Impunity.” The phrase honors the code of mutual protection traditionally upheld by law enforcement while the ribbon signals a department’s period of mourning.

The ceremony honored more than 40 fallen law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies across Texas. Families of those lost were in attendance, and the names of the honorees were added to the Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial, housed on the grounds of the Capitol. Gov. Greg Abbott delivered remarks at the ceremony and presented Texas Medals of Honor to members of each of the officers’ families.
