Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the Texas Capitol Wednesday and marched through the streets of downtown for the 50501 Movement’s protest against Project 2025. 50501 is a nationwide organizing movement which called for protests in all 50 states on the same day.
Demonstrators chanted and held signs advocating for a wide array of causes that have filled headlines since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, including immigration, Palestinian liberation and transgender rights.
Many protesters also held signs denouncing the role of Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, in the Trump administration since the president’s second term began.
Cheryl Gonzales came from San Antonio with a group for the protest. Gonzales, who is new to organizing, was also hoping to garner attendance for her upcoming educational rally in San Antonio.
“It’s a human rights issue for me,” she said.
Halfway through the five-hour protest, demonstrators began to march south along Congress Avenue through downtown Austin. Guided by Austin Police and Department of Public Safety State Troopers, demonstrators weaved through the city’s streets before returning to the Capitol after roughly 30 minutes.
The 50501 movement grew in popularity across social media platforms, including Reddit, Instagram and TikTok, where Gonzales’ friend sent her the flyer for the demonstration.
“We decided, ‘Hey, let’s go. Let’s make a difference, if we can,’” Gonzales said.
As Texas’ Capitol drew hundreds to its southern steps, seats of government across the nation welcomed the same. The Associated Press reported protests at capitol buildings across the nation, including in California, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Indiana.
