Former President Donald Trump will return to office as the 47th president of the United States, the Associated Press projects. The Republican party has also taken control of the Senate, the AP is projecting.
The announcement follows Trump’s projected win in Wisconsin early Wednesday morning at around 4:40 a.m. Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes put Trump at 277 electoral votes, seven votes higher than the necessary 270. He also won the swing states of Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
This also makes Sen. JD Vance the vice president elect.
Trump’s victory against Vice President Kamala Harris concluded one of the closest-polled presidential races in American history, with the candidates essentially tied in public polling up until Election Day.
Trump spoke to supporters at Mar-A-Lago Wednesday morning, declaring himself the 47th president around 1:30 a.m. central time. He also noted that Republicans would likely keep the House, though the AP has not made any projections on House control.
Harris declined to speak to supporters at a watch party Tuesday night, a member of her campaign’s staff said to supporters. He said she would speak to the public Wednesday.
