Colin Allred, the Democrat running to unseat Ted Cruz in the Senate, spoke about border security, abortion access and voter registration during an interview with Tim Miller of “The Bulwark” podcast at The Texas Tribune Festival Saturday.
Allred was critical of border security practices he called “inhumane,” and referred to putting buoys and razor wire in the river as a “stunt.” He also criticized Cruz for voting against a bipartisan border bill Allred said would have benefited Texas.
“I disagree with having an inhumane approach for the southern border,” Allred said. “You have to have a secure one. And there is a difference.”
Allred also said abortion access needs to be codified at the federal level. He spoke about Texans who had to leave their home state to access healthcare due to Texas’ abortion laws.
“This is not pro-life,” Allred said. “This is deeply, deeply anti-freedom.”
Allred also criticized Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s recent lawsuits against Travis and Bexar county voter registration efforts that Paxton claims are illegal.
Bexar county recently approved an action that would send voter registration applications to residents, but Paxton says this could mean residents who are ineligible may attempt to register to vote.
Travis county approved the use of taxpayer money to identify unregistered voters which Paxton says they don’t have the authority to do.
Allred also addressed raids on organizations such as the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC.
“This is not about election integrity,” Allred said. “This is about voter intimidation. And what they want to do is send a message to Texans that voting is not for you.”
